7 habits that, slowly, kill your laptop
- Putting it on your lap
- Taking it from place to place while it’s ON
- Not configuring Power saving settings
- Keeping the charger connected
- Lack of software maintenance
- Eating while using it
- Not performing internal maintenance

The impact of using the laptop on your lap will not only damage it, but this can also affect your health.
Scrotal hyperthermia, harming your reproductive organs, and certain types of cancers are some of the effects that keeping your laptop on your lap can cause, but today we will focus on how some of our bad habits have a negative impact on our laptops.
Working with your laptop on your lap, cushion, or on the bed blocks the vents where the heat is supposed to be expelled from. We shared an article related regarding the results of ignoring or neglecting your laptop when it is overheating.
Since laptops are portable devices, we tend to move around with them or go to different places. However, it is most likely that, ALL of us, have walked around with the lid open and the laptop ON, at least once.
This is something we must avoid doing. Laptops have very sensitive components and since they are assembled in a way that makes them ‘portable’, those components are close to one another; they are also fragile and sensitive to a sudden impact.

Theoretically, laptop’s newer systems are configured to stop working when they are not being used for a certain period of time, depending on its configuration settings.
However, if such settings are not properly set, your device will keep running unnecessarily which will reduce its life time. Windows and MacOS do come with a default configuration. We advise to alaways check on this and make sure it is active.
It is recommendable to shut it down at least once a week.
Keeping the charger connected at all times will not overcharge your battery as their smart system stops energy flow once they reach a full charge. However, it is the heat that can reduce your battery’s life time.
Also, as mentioned, laptops are sensitive and the charging port is integrated or soldered to the motherboard. Keeping it connected at all times, does raise the risk of breaking it with a sudden movement and even though it is fixable, this type of repair tends not to last for a very long time or to cause the laptop to overheat. Having said this, Why risk it?

Using a laptop or a desktop, even for short periods of time, causes accumulation of unnecessary files in your storage drive. Whether your laptop is a few years old or brand new is irrelevant.
Software maintenance prevents your computer from crashing, performing slow, data loss and even overheating.
Do not neglect your computer by not cleaning its clutter, installing unnecessary programs, ignoring operating system updates, installing unlicensed or pirate software, not using anti malware or antivirus protection.
Well, it is quite obvious why it is a bad habit to eat while we are using our laptops and we all know it. Yet, we all do it.
It is very simple, the risk of spilling any liquids, bread crumbs, rice or any small piece of food that can get into the hardware through the vents or the keyboard can cause serious damage, specially liquids.
If, disaster strikes, ending up on liquids getting inside your laptop; the chances of getting it fixed are very little.
You have been warned.

We cannot express on how important cleaning the inside of your computer is. We dedicated an entire post to this topic.
Whether you use your laptop or not, is irrelevant. Dust and humidity do not really care about it, they just accumulate and cause serious damage to your laptop’s components.
We advise you to have a professional perform a deep-cleaning of your laptop at least once a year.

Follow these tips to ensure your device is healthy, running smoothly and to extend its lifetime.
